7aam Arivu and Beyond

7aam arivu movie review

Note – The review ends first para. If you came here for the review, you can turn back after the first para. Else, please do read on.

Ezhaam arivu definitely falls short of the hype and publicity it received in the pre-release stage. The movie however is worth a watch. A science-fantasy story that builds quickly around the legend of Bodhi dharma, strikes a chord with its completely new setting. While the first half builds up the momentum and keeps you on your toes, the second half fails to keep up with the pace and ‘wow ‘ factor created in the first half. The movie talks about the long-lost influences of the Tamilians who lived more than a thousand years ago. The story retains your interest till the very end though it turns quite predictable in the later stages. The movie has a lot of not-so-subtle references to Jananaadhan’s ‘E’ starring Jeeva. Surya has done a fantastic job and played his role to perfection. Johnny Nyugen’s role takes bad-assery beyond our usual cliche. Sruthi Hasan and Harris Jeyaraj are dents on an otherwise splendidly pictured movie. The director could have boldly removed all the songs and concentrated more on the climax. With a different concept and adept handling, Ezhaam arivu announces Surya’s entry into mega-budget cinema with a bang. The film falls short of blockbuster perfection and but still fits the bill of a new-age movie. Murugadoss fails once again to beat his heights of ‘Ramana’, but succeeds in giving a totally different movie, just as he has been doing time and again.

3.5/5 – Miss it at your own risk!

Listening to views on 7aam arivu made me realize one very important thing. There are many people – fans and colleagues alike who want Surya to fail. I don’t skip movies until people tell me to not even step close to the theatre. Mausam, Milenge Milenge, Sura, Pudhiya Geethai, Shakthi, Komaram Puli, Aadhavan, etc., had a reputation for making people cry and come running out of the halls with strands of hair in their hands. Being neutral has its advantages. You don’t spin with the world, you see the world spinning around you, while you stand still. This does not always work though. The last time I read mediocre/poor reviews , missed the movie and ended up kicking myself was for … believe it or not – ‘Anbe Sivam’ !!! Same was the case for ‘Hey ram’. Two of the best movies ever made in Tamil cinema. Who knew – right?

I find that fans of rival actors are happy to criticize this movie mainly to berate Surya. Hundreds of blogs have already popped up spoofing the movie and telling how worse it was. Well, opinions(mine included) are like …err you know …everyone has one and stuff. So you are entitled to it. Say, you are movie critic and found something seriously wrong with the movie, take a bow. You are definitely a genius or a very good movie reviewer. But if you nastily remarked about this movie JUST because Ajith or Vijay or Rajini or Kamal or I-Dont-know-who-else was not there in the movie, welcome to the hall of shame!!! Oh don’t complain… you ve got a LOT of company.

Still not sure if you are in this list? Take a simple test. Take out your fav hero. Thats rite. Put him in the lead role of the movie… I mean both the roles. Suddenly liking it now?? Ha ha you suck!! You just had shit in your feet before you even stepped on it.

What was that? – Don’t like it even now? Peace. You rock! We are the good guys man!

I remember reading a comment about ‘Dasavatharam’. A dude was saying ‘Kamal was looking down through his Binocular from the helicopter and he sees germs multiplying …WTF???!!’ Kamal is the most meticulous actor in India and has undergone various trainings and preparations for every single movie that he appeared in till now. The most talented actor and skilled technician in India, is being questioned by an idiot who must have not even seen ‘Saagarasangamam’ or ‘Guna’. But then why do you think Kamal is making movies like ‘Mumbai express’ and ‘Manmadhan ambu’ instead of masterpieces like ‘Nayagan’ and ‘Devar magan’? I… you know what? I ll leave that part to you.

7aam arivu talks about many things that we have missed and are still missing from our rich culture and our ancestors. They forgot one thing and ironically, that was ‘taste’. ‘Dumb’ Americans make and watch complex movies, while we are happy to watch movies that hardly challenge the intellect of a plague-affected rat, in the name of ‘entertainment’. We are happy to celebrate sub-standard and mediocre achievements but are never ready to prove ourselves wrong. But then ‘movies’ is just a part of the whole story.
